OPTOMAP RETINAL EXAM WOODBRIDGE & VAUGHAN
The Gagliardi Optometric Clinic strives to provide the most advanced technology available to assess the ocular health of our patients. The Optomap Retinal Exam is an important part of your eye exam. Many eye conditions do not have any symptoms in the early stages and you may not notice any change in your vision. It is important to know that even patients with 20/20 vision can have an eye disease. Diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, as well as other systemic diseases sucha as diabetes and high blood pressure, can be detected with a thorough exam of the retina. The retina is a layer of tissue at the back of the eye and possesses the photoreceptors to perceive light and works similar to the film in a camera.
An optomap exam provides a scan to confirm a healthy eye or detect the presence of disease. The image can be enhanced and manipulated to help analyze the reina in further detail that can't be done simply by just looking in your eye with a light. The image provides a view of approximately 80% of the retina. This does not replace a dilated examination of the retina but is only used as an additional tool. The images are reviewed with patient in the exam room with the opportunity for the patient to ask questions and understand their image. An image is then included in you file so that comparisons can be made at future exams to help detect potential problems sooner.
Our office possesses the new Daytona Retinal Scanner which is the newest version of this instrument and has autofluorescence. This new procedure will detect changes in retinal cells before they die to help diagnose eye diseases such as macular degeneration at an earlier stage.
